Félix Buhot

Félix Hilaire Buhot ( born July 9, 1847 in Valognes, † April 26, 1898 in Paris) was a French painter and illustrator.

Life

He is regarded as one of the innovators of etching in 19th century France with Felix Bracquemond and Charles Jacque. He used in his prints various experimental techniques (in addition to etching aquatint, drypoint and modern methods such as photo-mechanical reproduction) and was known for his marges symphoniques in which he excited by edge details of medieval manuscripts einbaute detail views in his prints. Many of his prints make Paris and especially the neighborhood of his apartment on the Boulevard de Clichy dar. Other popular motifs were scenes at sea, and he also published illustrations of scenes from London. Features were often representations of the effects of the weather. Buhot was very successful in his time and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1875 to 1886.

He illustrated many of the books by Jules Amédée Barbey d' Aurevilly.

In 1888 he had an exhibition in New York City, organized by the art dealer Frederick Keppel.

He signed with FB ( also inverted) and also with an owl.
