Felix Stähelin

Felix Staehelin ( born December 28, 1873 in Basel, † February 20, 1952 ) was a Swiss historian.

Life

Felix Staehelin, son of a silk ribbon manufacturer, studied Classical Philology and Ancient History in Basel, Bonn and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1897 with a dissertation on the Galatians. 1902-1907 he worked as a school teacher in Winterthur and Basel. From 1907 he was a lecturer, from 1917 and from 1931 to 1937 Associate Professor of Ancient History at the University of Basel. He has published scientific papers to Asia Minor and the Roman history. His 1927 published overview representation of Switzerland in the Roman era was long considered a standard work and was reprinted twice. In addition, Staehelin has also written numerous articles for Pauly Realencyclopädie of classical archeology. 1929-1934 he was instrumental in the (first) Jacob Burckhardt Complete Edition.
