Fellah

As a fellah (also Felache, from Arabic فلاح Fallah, DMG Fallah, tiller ', derived from the verb فلح / falaḥa /, the ground split / edit '; plural فلاحين / Fallāḥīn ) is a member of the vital for agriculture of the Near East called, especially in Egypt.

Fellahin make up about 60 percent ( 2005), the largest population group in Egypt. The fellahin are largely politically powerless and despised by the townsfolk. They still live mostly in houses of clay, just as their ancestors for thousands of years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the proportion was much higher. Only at the beginning of urbanization flocked many fellahin in the cities.
