Felsenburg (Bern)

The Untertorturm ( called Rock Castle ) is a former gate tower from the 13th century in Bern, Switzerland. He stands at Klösterlistutz 2 and 4

History

In 1260 the tower was built as part of the city's defense and in 1335 first mentioned. 1583 the facade was changed dramatically and the tower lost its medieval appearance. Until about 1630, the road was out of town through the gate next to the tower.

In 1764 the tower was rebuilt again and got the still visible today tent roof; later he lost his defense industrial importance. In 1862 he was sold into private hands and converted into living accommodation. Among other things, the moat was filled, canceled the baroque triumphal arch, cultivated a staircase and broke several windows.

Between 2000 and 2002 the tower was extensively restored at the expense of the civic community of Bern. Since the late 19th century the Untertorturm is romantically called rock castle.
