Femoral nerve

The femoral nerve ( " femoral nerve" ) is a nerve of the peripheral nervous system, isolated from the lumbosacral plexus ( lumbar cross mesh ). It has its origin in humans in the first to fourth lumbar segment (L1 -L4) spinal cord in other mammals in the posterior lumbar segment (L3 - L6). From there, he proceeds with the musculus psoas major through the muscular lacuna (muscle gate) to the thigh.

Muscular branches

The femoral nerve innervates a number of muscle:

  • Psoas major
  • Psoas minor
  • Musculus iliacus
  • Musculus quadriceps femoris
  • Sartorius muscle
  • Musculus pectineus

Saphenous Nerve

At the thigh separates from the femoral nerve of the saphenous nerve (Arabic: safin " hidden "). He moves with the femoral artery ( femoral artery ) to the inner side of the femur and provides the inside of the leg (as in animals the hind limb ) to the middle leg.

Due to the numerous muscles, which supplies the femoral nerve, paralysis leads to serious movement disorders. The active flexion of the hip joint can no longer occur ( Psoasgruppe ), people can not sit up from a lying position, animals hardly show the hind leg still. The knee is in flexion posture and can no longer be stretched under its own power ( quadriceps). The leg buckled therefore the occurrence or is no longer installed ( the dog of the rule). The patellar reflex is disturbed or missing.

Nerve - femoral nerve block

The femoral nerve blockade ( femoral nerve block, 3 - in-1 block ) is a regional anesthesia procedure that allows surgery on the leg or the lower extremity. Here, the bar ( inguinal ) local anesthetics are injected in the region, whereby the nerves of the lumbar plexus, mainly of the femoral nerve, to a lesser extent the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and the obturator nerve, are reversibly blocked. The femoral nerve blockade is a relatively easy to perform and little side effects method. In addition to a single injection, the contribution of a pain catheter ( Femoraliskatheter ) is often practiced for continuous pain.
