Fencing at the Summer Olympics

Fencing is one of the oldest Olympic sports and is one of the four disciplines that were represented at all Summer Olympic Games.

History

In Athens in 1896 three contests were on the agenda: saber, foil and foil for fencing master. Epee fencing arrived in Paris in 1900, fencing team in Antwerp in 1920 to do so. In Paris in 1924, women fought for the first time to gold in the women's foil. In Rome in 1960 came the team in Atlanta in 1996 epee, saber in Athens in 2004 to do so. By decision of the World Fencing Association FIE 2008, the team competitions in men's foil and women's epee were not discharged. 2012 have paused in the men's epee and women's saber teams.

The approval of the fencing master to the first three Olympic Games were an exception to the amateur status. Single Stick, fencing with a wooden stick, only once was olympic.
