The Fender Mustang is an electric guitar model with massive corpus (English: Solid Body ), which is being built by the U.S. musical instrument manufacturer Fender since 1964.

History

To close the gap between the entry-level guitars and the more expensive models, 1964, the Fender Mustang was presented. It has the same body as the Duo -Sonic, as well as the two electromagnetic pickups in single-coil construction ( single coil ). New to the Mustang were improved electrical circuit and a newly designed tremolo system similar to the Fender Jaguar and Fender Jazzmaster. The production was first set in 1981; since 1986, Fender Japan creates a new version of the Fender Mustang. Under the brand name Fresher copies were also offered by a Japanese manufacturer.

The Mustang is one next to the featured 1966 Fender Mustang Bass for the last instruments that were co-developed by company founder Leo Fender. After selling the Fender company to the media company CBS in October 1964 Leo Fender withdrew during the year 1965.

Construction

The Mustang follows as already the electric guitar models Fender Telecaster and the Fender Stratocaster the basic design principle of the Fender company: At a solid body, a maple neck wood is screwed. However, Fender atypical poplar or (very rarely seen in old models ) Mahogany is used for the body. The tuning machines are located in a line on the upper side of the asymmetrical headstock. The electronics are mounted on an existing plastic pickguard, which is located under the guitar strings on the body. The Mustang was initially in two versions with a short ( 22.5 Zoll/21 frets ) and a long (24 Zoll/22 frets ) Scale offered, with the production of the necks was quickly abandoned short scale for bad sales. The electronics consists of two single-coil pickups, which are managed by two slide switches as well as one volume and tone controls. Through the two switches, each of which has three possible settings, with the mustang are a total of four different sounds available.

The Mustang in music

Although the Mustang was originally designed by Fender as "Students Model ", there are quite a few well-known guitarists who have used this instrument and also on the stage. Were mentioned by name Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Shakira, Johnny Winter, as well as David Byrne, John Frusciante, Todd Rundgren, Graham Coxon, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith and Adrian Belew.

Jimi Hendrix used a red Mustang in the recordings for the second plate of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, titled Axis: Bold as Love. The guitar was sold at auction in 2007 for $ 400,000.

One of the most famous Mustang player was Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana ( see, among others, in the videos to the songs Smells Like Teen Spirit and In Bloom). Cobain used the Mustang as a template for his own signature guitar: On the question of how a possible " Kurt Cobain Special edition" should look like, Cobain photographed his Mustang and a Fender Jaguar, cut the two photos in the middle, stuck the top of the Mustang at the bottom of the Jaguar and presented the results with the word " So ". Following this logic, the guitar (Jaguar and Mustang ) took the art name " Jag - Stang " in the production.
