Fenian Brotherhood

The founding of the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood in Dublin (IRB ) and the Fenian Brotherhood ( Irish Bráithreachas na bhFíníní ) in New York City, United States happened almost at the same time in 1858 and 1859.

The Fenians named themselves after the " Fianna ", the hordes of the legendary hero Fionn mac Cumhaill from the Middle Ages. Both cases were simply as " Fenians " (Irish na Finini ) and are soon formed a loosely cooperating organization in the nation. The term " Fenians " was later used for a synonym for all of Irish independence supporters and in particular in Northern Ireland until today. Through emigration, these groups were supported and installed in other countries of the British sphere of influence, such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England.
