Fenoterol is a drug from the group of β2 -agonists.
Fenoterol is administered as a spray by inhalation and causes in the lungs by binding as an agonist at the β2 -adrenoceptors of bronchial muscle a widening of the bronchi ( bronchodilation ).
Since it is one of the short-acting bronchodilators, it is used as a rescue medication for asthma or COPD. The effect lasts three to five hours and is a few minutes after inhalation.
Fenoterol acts continue tocolytic, ie an inhibitory effect on uterine contractions. Side effects a reflex tachycardia, a history of angina can be triggered, and the hypoglycemic effect of antidiabetic agents be reduced.
Stereoisomerism
Fenoterol contains two stereocenters. Consequently, there are four stereoisomers. As a drug, the (RR, SS) - racemate is used because it is 9 to 20 times more effective than the (RS, SR ) - enantiomers.
