Ferdinand Berthoud

Ferdinand Berthoud ( born March 18, 1727 Plancemont in Neuchatel, Switzerland, † June 20, 1807 in Groslay at Montmorency ) was a Swiss watchmaker of the 18th century, who published numerous writings on watchmaking. His chief merit was the development of a particularly sturdy marine chronometer.

Life

In 1745, he went to Paris, where he worked primarily with Julien Le Roy. He designed and built watches, pocket watches and chronometers whose time accuracy and precision he perfected. Of particular note are his improvements of the oscillation results of the sprung balance and the chronometer Ganges. Inter alia Berthoud was therefore also the purveyor to King Louis XV. and his grandson and successor, Louis XVI. ordered.

1807, at the age of 80 years, Ferdinand Berthoud died in Groslay at Montmorency (Val -d'Oise ) near Paris.
