Ferdinand Gehr

Ferdinand Gehr ( born January 6, 1896 in Niederglatt SG, community Oberuzwil; † 10 July 1996 Altstätten ) was a Swiss painter. He is regarded as the most important religious painter of Switzerland in the 20th century.

Life and work

He became known through his sacred image issues. Gehr was initially controversial, but is now counted among the large, internationally recognized church painters of the 20th century. 1954 demanded Bishop Francis of speaking, that, before the consecration of the church of St. Anthony was hidden in Wettingen Gehr apse painting.
