Life

Gregorovius graduated from high school at the Friedrich school Gumbinnen. He studied philology and history at the Albertus University of Königsberg and heard the historian Wilhelm Drumann. In 1838 he became a member of the Corps Masovia, where he remained all his life closely connected. The student body ( and the nichtkorporierten dippe ) chose him on July 21, 1840 Entrepreneur of homage for the new royal couple. When Friedrich Wilhelm IV and his wife Elizabeth visited Ludovica of Bavaria Konigsberg, he and Wilhelm Jordan wore on September 10, 1840, Carmen ( poetry ) of the student body before. A detailed report by Gregorovius is obtained. As Gregorovius after the PhD. the Albertina left, he was adopted on September 24, 1841 with a Comitat.

The history of the city of Rome his contributions to the science of history are the most important ones that affect the age of the Renaissance and humanism. In addition to Jacob Burckhardt, Georg Voigt, Ludwig von Pastor and Alfred von Reumont he is the authority of the German Renaissance Research of the 19th century. The history of the city of Rome in the Middle Ages is considered a classic of the literature on the Renaissance. Besides this well-known work belongs in this age his biography of Pope Alexander VI. Lucretia Borgia and. No less significant, but less well known are his writings on Greek history in the Byzantine period, or even of Athens in the Middle Ages.

To date, with the classification of Gregorovius public have difficulties; because, first, it distinguishes his writing talent by the historians of the tendril - school, on the other hand, he translated works of Italian authors into German, as a part of the Giovanni Melis writings. That he was not cross-linked with established colleagues in Germany, probably was mainly due to his deep dislike of the Prussian-German authoritarian state - for his senior colleagues were in Germany. Italy was exile for him. The value of his work has never been seriously doubted, though he was attacked personally. The frequent translations of his works into other languages emphasize das.

When he died, telegraphed his family according to his wish to Rome:

"È morto Ferdinando Gregorovius cittadino romano. "
