Ferdinand Hitzig

Ferdinand Hitzig ( born June 23, 1807 in Hauingen; † January 22, 1875 in Heidelberg ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Hitzig visited the Pädagogium in Lörrach and the Gymnasium in Karlsruhe as a student of the prelate Johann Peter Hebel, who was a lifelong friend of his father.

He studied theology in 1824 at the University of Heidelberg from 1825 to 1827 at the University of Halle. There his teachers Wilhelm Gesenius had great influence on his further theological development. After his theological exams in 1827 he went to the University of Göttingen in order to devote himself to scientific theology, and joined there the theologian Heinrich Georg August Ewald on.

In 1829 Hitzig Associate Professor of Old Testament at Heidelberg, in 1833 professor of theology at the University of Zurich, where he officiated 1842/43 as rector. In 1861 he was appointed as the successor of Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Umbreit at the University of Heidelberg. His successor in Zurich was initially Eberhard Schrader (1862-1870), then Heinrich Steiner ( 1871-1889 ).

Hitzig was co-founder in 1863 of the "German Protestant Association ".
