Ferdinand IV, King of the Romans

Life

Archduke Ferdinand IV was the eldest son of Emperor Ferdinand III. from his first marriage to Maria Anna of Spain. He had been designated as successor to his father, as in 1652, it was agreed during a visit of several electors at his court in Prague his election as Roman-German king. Death

When Ferdinand died in Vienna on July 9, 1654 of smallpox, the body was dissected on the same evening, embalmed and placed on a bed of state lying on public display. One day after his death took place at 9 clock in the evening the transmission of the heart in the Augustinian church in the Hofburg, where it was buried in a simple ceremony in the local Loreto Chapel. The body was eventually buried after several days of elaborate funerals in the Imperial Crypt. Since Ferdinand worshiped the Madonna of Loreto, he had adopted the testamentary provision that his heart should be buried under the Loreto chapel of the Augustinian Church.
