Ferdinand Keller, Ferdinand Keller (* August 5, 1842 in Karlsruhe, † July 8, 1922 in Baden -Baden ) was a historical painter of the period.

Life

The father Ferdinand Keller was a civil engineer and was awarded the contract in 1857, river regulation, bridges and road construction in Brazil to build. Of the fifteen -year-old Ferdinand Keller was able to accompany him with his brother Franz. During the more than four -year stay Keller made ​​his drawing talent in the tropical landscape of self-taught.

After returning from Brazil Ferdinand Keller began in 1862 to study at the art school in Karlsruhe. He studied, among others Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, the former director of the Art Academy. After the death of Schirmer, in 1863, continued his studies at Keller Ludwig des Coudres. Dissatisfied with the training at the Art School he took private lessons from 1864 in the studio of Hans Canon. 1866 was followed by study trips to Switzerland and France. 1867-1869 Keller lived in Rome, where he made the acquaintance of Anselm Feuerbach. Both had their studios in Rome in the same house.

1870 Ferdinand Keller was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe as a teacher for portrait and history painting. In 1873 he was appointed a professor, a student of him was Carl spirit. From 1880 to 1913 he was director of the Art Academy. Ferdinand Keller died in 1922 at the age of 79 in Baden -Baden.

Work

He celebrated his first major success in 1867 with history painting "Death of Philip II ." In numerous monumental paintings glorifying historical, dynastic and cultural events of the German and Baden history. The five by seven meters measured painting " The Apotheosis of Emperor William I " was born, 1888. Was purchased a year later by Emperor Wilhelm II and is now on permanent loan to the National Gallery in Berlin in the Berlin Museum.

As further work to find the jewelry for the Karlsruhe Court Theatre and the Dresden Semperoper. In the rebuilt opera the painting can be admired on the restored theater curtain again today. The decoration of the King -Karl -Halle in Stuttgart Landesmuseum Württemberg inspired the king so much that he cellar the personal title of nobility rental. On behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden basement painted the history of Baden. The colossal painting is now in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden -Baden. Numerous other contracts were for public buildings and mansions. With his etchings numerous books were illustrated.
