Ferdinand Pauwels

Ferdinand Wilhelm Pauwels ( [ pʌu̯əls ]; born April 13, 1830 in Ekeren in Antwerp, † March 26, 1904 in Dresden) was a Belgian painter of historical scenes.

Life

At the age of twelve years Pauwels 1842 students at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts Antwerp and was most often taught there until 1850 by Jules Dujardin and Gustave Wappers. During his training, he could debut successfully in the Academy exhibitions; his work Coriolanus at Rome in 1852 awarded the Prix de Rome.

Connected with this price was a generous scholarship that Pauwels and 1856 allowed for a study stay at the Villa Medici in Rome. Pauwels be held on his return in 1856 to some time in Dresden, before he settled as a freelance artist in Antwerp.

1862 Pauwels took a reputation as a professor at the founded two years earlier Ducal Art School Weimar and taught there for ten years with great success numerous pupils, including Max Liebermann. In parallel, emerged during this time many of his oil paintings, but also his well-known " Luther " cycle at the Wartburg, seven murals of the life of Martin Luther.

In 1872, Pauwels returned to Belgium and worked the next four years freelancing again. In 1876 he was appointed to Dresden Art Academy, where he again nachkam as a professor his teaching job. During this time he also created a group of six murals in the auditorium of the Prince's School of Meissen. Pauwels died in 1904 in Dresden and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery.

Reception

The public and critics admired among others, the clever implementation of historical topics. While in Pauwels early works still biblical scenes ( " Deborah as a judge " ), so this has changed over the years to political statements ( "America creates slavery ").
