Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra

Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra ( born September 7, 1816 in Brno, † August 5, 1880 in Vienna ) was an Austrian dermatologist. He is regarded as the founder of the scientific study of the skin diseases.

Origin

The later Ritter von Hebra was born in 1816 under the name of Ferdinand Karl Franz black man. He was the illegitimate son of Aloysia Friederike Slawik, born black man, who was living separately from her husband. Therefore, the extra-marital child was given the mother's maiden name. His father was a war field inspector Johann Hebra, a civil servant in the officer rank. His parents married after Aloysia had become a widow in 1830. But she died already in 1833. At 24, John Hebra adopted his son, when he was come of age. Father and son had a good relationship since the two lived together from 1838 and even after Hebras marriage with Johanna Nepomucena, daughter of kk Lived royal secretary Hermann von Huze, within the family.

Medical activity

As a young doctor Hebra had to serve with " itch" as part of his training at the Department of Internal Medicine patients. This activity then possessed the slightest reputation among physicians and has traditionally been relegated to the recent colleagues. Back then there were the dermatology does not in itself, the disease symptoms in the skin were also treated by internists. But Hebra developed a keen interest in skin diseases, and it is thanks to him that today dermatology as an independent medical Fachdiziplin ever existed.

In Vienna General Hospital, he took over - as the first professor of dermatology in Austria at all - with 29 years of the Department of Dermatology and developed a new terminology and new forms of therapy. He proved that it is a parasite in the causative agent of scabies. He also invented the waterbed for the prophylaxis or treatment of decubitus ulcers. He became famous for his " Atlas of Skin Diseases " (1856, illustrated by Anton Elfinger ) and the " Manual of Skin Diseases " (1878, together with Moritz Kaposi ). Hebra was from 1879 until his death president of the Society of Physicians in Vienna.

Marriage and descendants

He had seven children with his wife Johanna. His son Hans von Hebra was also later Professor of Dermatology in Vienna. Another son fell in Hradec Kralove, a daughter later married Hebra's younger friend, colleagues and successors Professor Moritz Kaposi.

Awards

Hebra received many honors for his achievements in medicine, he was raised by the Austrian Emperor in 1877 as " Ritter von Hebra " to knighthood, with his illegitimate birth is not proved an obstacle.

His honorary devoted grave is located on the Hernalser Cemetery (Group AR, number 34) in Vienna. The Hebragasse in the 9th district of Vienna Alsergrund is named after him since 1886 (except in the years 1938 to 1945, when it was performed as an extension of Albert Street).
