Ferdinand Schichau

Ferdinand Gottlob Schichau (* January 30, 1814 in Elbing, West Prussia (now Elbląg ), † January 23, 1896 ) was a German entrepreneur. He founded the Schichau works.

Life

Schichau studied engineering at the Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg. After studying in the UK and in the Rhineland, he returned to Elbing. There he founded in 1837 Schichau works that established as Maschinenbauanstalt hydraulic machinery, excavators, and locomotives. Schichau built in Elbing, when workers' settlements. In 1872 he built the Elbląg Schichau shipyard. The Borussia produced at the shipyard in 1855 was Germany's first ship with propellers.

In 1889 Schichau a repair yard in pillau, the seaport of Königsberg in Prussia. Due to the good order situation was created in 1890 in Gdansk, a large shipyard, Gdansk Schichau shipyard. Could build and maintain Schichau there also larger ships to which the port of Elbing would not have been deep enough. After Ferdinand Schichau had died a week before his 82nd birthday, led his son Carl Ziese on the company.

In the People's Republic of Poland, the Danzig branch operation in Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk has been renamed. In Elblag Godfather city of Bremerhaven, the new Schichau shipyard of staff operating in 1950 on the right bank of Geestemünde (above the Rickmers shipyard) was built. They went bankrupt in 1996.

Monument

The shipyard relatives erected in front of the main building in Elbing a bronze statue Schichaus with the inscription: "YOUR BOSS revered. THE STAFF AND WORKERS ". Designed by Wilhelm Haverkamp monument was inaugurated on 18 November 1900. To the left goes a standing on the pedestal workers shouldering hammer a laurel wreath. The muse Clio sits on the pedestal to the right hand; she holds in her left hand a ship called Borussia. The figure was taken as a logo in the letterhead of the "Society of Friends of the Hamburg Ship Model Basin ".
