Ferdinand Tiemann

Johann Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Tiemann ( born June 10, 1848 in Rübeland, † November 14, 1899 in Meran ) was a German chemist.

Life and work

Tiemann studied 1866 first chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Braunschweig, then went to the pharmacist exam in 1869 as assistant to August Wilhelm von Hofmann at the University of Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1870 as External to the University of Göttingen, 1878 habilitation at the University of Berlin and in 1882 was appointed professor here. His field of work was the chemistry of fragrances.

1874 Tiemann discovered together with Wilhelm Haarmann, a method for the production of vanillin from coniferin. For large- scale use of this synthetic route Haarmann founded in 1875 in Wood Minden Haarmann 's Vanillinfabrik. Ferdinand Tiemann aspired to an academic career and therefore participated only as a silent partner in the company, which he will continue standing as a scientific consultant. Together with another student Hofmann Karl Ludwig Reimer discovered Tiemann 1876, the Reimer - Tiemann reaction, which provided a cost-effective production of vanillin from guaiacol.

Tiemann was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Honors

For his services to him the Leopoldina Hall in 1876 gave the Cothenius medal. In addition, the mineral Tiemannit was named after him.
