Ferdinand von Quast

Ferdinand von Quast ( born June 23, 1807 in Radensleben, † March 11, 1877 ) was a German architect, art historian and first since 1843 Prussian State conservator.

Life

Alexander Wilhelm Ferdinand von Quast Robert was the son of the landowner Wilhelm von Quast (* 1776) and his wife Charlotte Friederike Philippin Louise von Rohr ( 1786-1879 ). He was educated by private tutors and then attended the Plamannsche educational institution and finally the Neuruppiner school, which shows that nobles their offspring no longer withheld from the bourgeois- humanistic educational ideal.

From 1825 he studied at the General Building School (later the Berlin Academy of Architecture ) Architecture and Feldmeßtechnik, where he was also a pupil of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who, so the end of the liberation war, campaigned since 1815 for historic preservation. 1836 increased from Quast be Baumeister exam from.

After the death of his father he took over in 1830 the estate Radensleben and built in 1833 the mansion plus ancillary buildings. He was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives; politically he was conservative and loyal to the king.

During his studies, he traveled through Germany and to Italy, France and the Netherlands. 1838/1839 he spent almost a year in Italy and studied the ancient sites. Subsequently, he published several books and held in the Altes Museum lectures on the history of architecture. At the first meeting of German architects in Leipzig, he called for the establishment of a general association for the Study of German antiquities.

The extensive estate of Ferdinand von Quast, who in the archive of the TU Berlin ( 7000 drawings) and was in Radensleben in the manor house, was mostly destroyed in 1945. After all, many documents have been preserved in the archives of the former Prussian provinces.

He married in 1848 Maria von Diest ( 1818-1885 ), the eldest daughter of General Heinrich von Diest. The couple had several children, including:
