Ferdinand Zirkel

Ferdinand Circle ( born May 20, 1838 in Bonn, † June 11, 1912 ) was a German geologist.

Circles in 1861 received his doctorate at the University of Bonn. He was a professor of geology at the University of Lviv ( 1863) and Kiel (1868 ) and from 1870 professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Leipzig. In 1882 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Circle was a pioneer in the microscopic examination of minerals and rocks.

In 1898 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London.
