Ferdinando Carulli

Rosario Carulli Ferdinando Maria Meinrado ( born February 10, 1770 in Naples, † February 17, 1841 in Paris) was an Italian composer and guitarist of the early Romantic period.

Life

Carulli first learned to play the cello, but soon showed strong interest in the guitar. With about twenty years, he began to teach himself to play the guitar. This instrument was from now on for him at the center. At this time in his hometown of Naples no guitar teacher was to be found, he was forced to develop his own style. In addition, he also studied music theory.

After he had sufficiently developed his technique on the guitar, he was first in Naples and later also outside Italy, especially in France, concerts. There he also met his future wife Marie- Josephine Boyer, with whom he had a son, Gustavo Carulli. After this concert tours he first moved to Milan.

Some initial releases of guitar compositions appeared around 1807 by Ricordi in Milan. After a stay in Vienna he settled permanently from April 1808 in Paris down. There he was in the aristocratic salons as the first guitarist of the city. Carulli was the first musician to " socially acceptable " made ​​the guitar in Paris. François -Joseph Fétis reported in the Universal Biography: "The artist came in April 1808 in Paris, gave a few concerts and had overwhelming success he soon became the homme à la mode, both as virtuoso and as a teacher. ". It is said that he was not the most spirited musician, but at a fast pace and was able to play accurately. Together with the instrument maker François René Lacôte he made ​​important contributions to the technical improvement of the guitar. He developed along with a ten-string guitar Lacôte ( Décachorde ) and brought both a textbook specifically for the ten-string instrument out. He wrote a popular guitar school and created a total of about 400 works, mostly for guitar and flute.
