Ferdinando Giuseppe Antonelli

Ferdinando Giuseppe Cardinal Antonelli, OFM (* July 14, 1896 in Subbiano, Arezzo Province, Italy, † July 12, 1993 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Ferdinando Giuseppe Antonelli joined in 1909 in Florence as a novice in the Franciscan order and studied at the Pontifical Athenaeum Antonianum of Rome Catholic theology and philosophy. On April 7, 1914, he passed the final profession. During World War II he was drafted into military service. On July 25, 1922, he received in Rome, the sacrament of Holy Orders and then studied until 1928 at the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology.

From 1928 to 1965 he was a lecturer at the Pontifical Athenaeum Antonianum and in the period from 1937 to 1943 and from 1953 to 1959 Rector of the institution. In addition, he was from 1939 to 1945 Definitor General of the Franciscan Order. From 1962 to 1965 he worked as a theologian of the Council also participants in the Second Vatican Council.

On 26 January 1965, he was named by Pope Paul VI. Secretary of the Congregation of Rites. A year later, on 19 February 1966 appointed him Paul VI. Titular Archbishop of Idicra and gave him on 19 March of the same year in St. Peter's episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Francesco Carpino and Ettore Cunial.

In solemn consistory of 5 March 1973 it took Paul VI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Sebastiano al Palatino in the College of Cardinals. Since he had already been completed at this time 80 years of age, he did not participate in the two conclaves of 1978. On 2 February 1983, he was elevated to cardinal priests per hac vice. Since the death of Henri de Lubac Cardinal on September 4, 1991, he was the oldest cardinal of the world. He died two days before his 97th birthday.
