Ferenc Kiss (wrestler)

Ferenc Kiss ( born January 5, 1942 in Nick, Vas County ) is a former Hungarian wrestler and bronze medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in Greco- Roman style in the heavyweight division.

Career

Ferenc Kiss began in 1954 in Budapest with the rings. The club with which he started was " all- Mávag " Budapest. Ferenc specialized in the Greco- Roman style. In 1965 he was Hungarian Champion in the light heavyweight for the first time. A year earlier he had given at the Olympic Games in Tokyo with a good 6th place in the light heavyweight debut at international championships.

At the World Cup 1965 in Tampere Ferenc showed great progress, because he remained unbeaten in five fights and was behind the Soviets Valeri Anisimov Vice World Champion.

At the World Cup 1966 in Toledo / USA Ferenc missed the 4th place in the light heavyweight division just a medal. A defeat against Nicolae Martinescu from Romania, with whom he should deliver many hot duels in the next few years, prevented that he could intervene in the medal fight.

At the European Championships 1967 in Minsk Ferenc then scored the first title. With six victories, he was confident European champions. Among the defeated him wrestlers were among the world-class athletes Nicolae Martinescu, Vasily Merkulov from the Soviet Union and Per Svensson from Sweden. At the World Championships the same year in Bucharest Ferenc succumbed to the new Soviet Star Nikolai Yakovenko and just missed out on a medal.

1968 succeeded Ferenc at the European Championships in Västerås again winning the title. More disappointing for him therefore came at the Olympic games of that year in Mexico City. He defeated his old rival Nicolae Martinescu and, surprisingly, against Juergen blade from Leipzig and only came to 8th place in the light heavyweight division.

Due to a reclassification of the weight classes by the International Wrestling Federation ( FILA ) Ferenc Kiss launched in 1969 in the heavyweight division. 1969, however, he could not participate in any international championships since the Hungarian Association for the European Championship in Modena sent no wrestler, because Italy had banned the flying of the GDR flag and the socialist states therefore boycotted the event and Hungary to the World Cup in Argentina's Mar del Plata cost reasons posted any wrestler.

The year 1970 was for Ferenc then again very successful. First, he was in spring in Berlin without defeat, but with three undecided battles, Vice European Champion, where he once again could not beat in a draw verlaufenen fight Jürgen blade and then he also finished in the autumn in Edmonton at the World Championships 2nd place.
