Ferentino

Ferentino is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, 21,150 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is located 74 km east of Rome and 12 km northwest of Frosinone.

Geography

Ferentino is situated on a hill overlooking the valley of the Sacco, between the Monti Ernici in the North and the Monti Lepini in the south in the traditional countryside of Ciociaria. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici.

To Ferentino include the districts Cercete, Partei, Porciano, San Rocco, Sant'Antonio, Stazione, Terme Pompeo, Terra Valle, Tofe and Torre Noverana.

The neighboring municipalities are Acuto, Alatri, Anagni, Fiuggi, Frosinone, Fumone, Morolo, Sgurgola, Supino and Trivigliano.

Traffic

With the Ferentino Ferentino Supino station is on the railway line Rome - Naples. The nearest motorway exit is Frosinone on the A1 Autostrada del Sole.

History

In ancient times the city was settled by the Hernicans since the 8th century BC. 413 BC it became the Roman sphere of influence, BC was besieged and taken after an uprising 361 by the Romans and was finally named Ferentinum the Roman Empire. 211 BC the city was destroyed by Hannibal. She later became a municipium; their inhabitants belonged to the tribe Publilia.

Since the 4th century AD Ferentino bishop's seat is (now Diocese of Frosinone - Veroli - Ferentino ) and was temporarily papal residence. 1223 met Pope Honorius III. Here the Emperor Frederick II and wrestled him promise for a crusade.

After a brief period as a free city in the 11th century Ferentino belonged until 1870 to the Papal States. During World War II the city was a center of partisans. After the war, a boom through industrialization.

  • From the time of Hernici large parts of the city wall, a so-called cyclopean wall with two gates are still preserved from the 4th century BC and further goals from Roman times.
