Fernando Cento

Fernando Cardinal Cento ( born August 10, 1883 in Pollenza, Macerata Province, Italy, † January 13, 1973 in Rome) was a bishop of the Diocese of Acireale and a Vatican diplomat.

Life

Fernando Cento studied in Macerata and Rome compartments Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 23 December 1905, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then taught at the seminary of Macerata. From 1916 to 1918, he knew the job of secretary at the papal majordomo. 1917 awarded him Pope Benedict XV. the title of Pontifical secret chamberlain, 1919, he appointed him a canon of the Cathedral of Macerata, where Fernando Cento diocesan newspaper "Il Cittadino " founded and edited.

In 1922 he was appointed Bishop of Acireale. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Giovanni Tacci Porcelli. Pope Pius XI. appointed Fernando Cento 1926 Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela, 1936, he entrusted him with the same task in Peru. Pope Pius XII. 1940 appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium and Luxembourg. 1953 Fernando Cento Papal envoy for the coronation celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II in the same year he was appointed head of the Apostolic Nunciature was transferred to Portugal.

Pope John XXIII. took him on 15 December 1958 as cardinal priest with the titular church of S. Eustachio to the College of Cardinals. Both under Pope John XXIII. as well as under Pope Paul VI. Fernando Cento acted on numerous occasions in Italy and abroad as Papal Envoy. On April 23, 1965 he was appointed cardinal bishop of Velletri.

He died on 13 January 1973 in Rome and was buried in the parish church of Pollenza.

In 1949 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica.
