Fernando Filoni
Fernando Filoni Cardinal ( born April 15, 1946 in Manduria, Taranto, Italy ) is a Vatican diplomat and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
Life
Fernando Filoni received on 3 July 1970, the sacrament of Holy Orders and a doctorate in philosophy and canon law. In 1982 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and got on 9 October of the same year by Pope John Paul II the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness bestowed ( Monsignor ). At first he did in the Apostolic Nunciature of Sri Lanka (1982-1983) and Iran (1983-1985) service. From 1985 to 1989 he worked in the Vatican Secretariat of State, and then looked back in the Apostolic Nunciature of Brazil (1989-1992) and the Philippines ( 1992-2001 ).
On 17 January 2001, John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Iraq and Jordan and Titular Archbishop of Volturnum. He received his episcopal consecration on March 19, 2001 Pope John Paul II himself, were co-consecrators Angelo Cardinal Sodano and Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. As the only foreign diplomat he remained during the Iraq war in Baghdad, earning him the nickname Nuncio brought courage. Archbishop Filoni considered an expert on China and the Middle East.
On 10 May 2011 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. in succession by Ivan Cardinal Dias Prefect for the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ( "Mission Congregation " ) appointed. On January 6, 2012 it was announced that Pope Benedict XVI him. will create on 18 February of the same year a cardinal in the consistory.
In solemn consistory of February 18, 2012 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Nostra Signora di Coromoto in San Giovanni di Dio in the College of Cardinals.
On September 21, 2013 Fernando Filoni and the entire leadership of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples by Pope Francis was confirmed permanently in office.
