Fernando Ortiz

Fernando Ortiz Fernández ( * July 16, 1881 in Havana, † April 10, 1969 ) was a Cuban scientists, politicians and lawyers. He is considered the founder of the Cuban anthropology and ethnomusicology. In this role, he was the teacher of a whole generation of modern Cuban anthropologist. He also made ​​a name for himself as the author of criminological and historiographical writings.

Fernando Ortiz, or simply Don Fernando was born in Havana and spent his childhood in Menorca in Spain. In 1895 he returned to Havana, where he began to study law. He finished studying in Barcelona in Spain and in Madrid earns doctoral degrees.

Ortiz enters the Diplomatic Service and consul in A Coruña, Geneva and Marseille. In 1906 he will advocate with the Cuban Court of Auditors, 1908 Professor of Law in Havana, where he teaches Public Law, Political Economy and Constitutional Law. In 1914 he co-founded the Cuban People's University. From 1917 on, he is ten years a deputy in the Cuban Parliament for the Liberal Party. 1931 must seek Fernando Ortiz exile in the United States because he had turned into a manifesto against the Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado. 1933, after the fall of Machado, he returns to Cuba. 1949 is the founding president of the Cuban Peace Movement.

Because of his pioneering research Fernando Ortiz also "Third discoverer of Cuba " is called (after Christopher Columbus and Alexander von Humboldt ).

One of his students is the Cuban anthropologist and writer Miguel Barnet, the date, the Foundation Fernando Ortiz passes.
