Fernando Zúñiga

Fernando Zúñiga ( born 1968 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Swiss linguist Chilean origin.

Life

After graduating in Economics from 1987 to 1991 in Santiago de Chile, he worked from 1992 to 1994 at the Swiss Re. Then Zúñiga studied at the University of Zurich General Linguistics, English linguistics and English literature; He finished 1999 with a degree in 2002 and obtained his doctorate.

From 2002 to 2003 he was a research associate at the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Leipzig, and in 2004 he stayed as a visiting scholar in Manchester (England), Melbourne ( Australia) and Eugene (Oregon, USA). From 2005 to 2006 he was a researcher at the Centro de Estudios Públicos in Santiago de Chile, and by the end of 2006 to January 2012, he was Assistant Professor at the Department of General Linguistics, University of Zurich, where he was habilitated in 2011.

From February 2012 to January 2013 was Zúñiga SNSF Professor at the University of Zurich. Since February 2013 he has held the Chair of General Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Bern.

His areas of specialization are linguistic typology and indigenous languages ​​of the Americas, in particular the Mapudungun and Algonquian languages.
