Ferndale Colliery

Ferndale Colliery, also Blaenllechau, was a coal mine in Wales. It was founded in 1857 from the mine pioneer David Davis ( 1797-1867 ).

A first major accident occurred on November 8, 1867. Two explosions shook the whole place. The body of Davis, who had entered the mine just before the explosion, was found at the salvage work first. The foul air made the lamps of the rescuers go out. It took a total of one month to 178 dead men and boys had been rescued.

In a further explosion on June 10, 1869, 53 people were killed.
