Ferney-Voltaire

Ferney- Voltaire ( pron. - closer, even Fernex, later Ferney ) is a commune with 8452 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain ​​, in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs to the arrondissement Gex to the Local Government Association, Pays de Gex and is the capital of the Canton of Ferney- Voltaire.

Geography

Ferney is only four kilometers away from the lake and is located directly next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport. The center of Geneva, there are about eight kilometers. History

The nickname Voltaire was the place in 1878 in honor of the great French philosopher Voltaire, who from 1759 until his death in 1778, lived here (for a stay in Paris) and the place had a lasting influence. 1890 was erected a statue of him in the town.
