Ferney-Voltaire
Ferney- Voltaire ( pron. - closer, even Fernex, later Ferney ) is a commune with 8452 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain , in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs to the arrondissement Gex to the Local Government Association, Pays de Gex and is the capital of the Canton of Ferney- Voltaire.
Geography
Ferney is only four kilometers away from the lake and is located directly next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport. The center of Geneva, there are about eight kilometers. The main building of the European nuclear research center CERN in Meyrin, close to the border France / Switzerland are close ( about seven kilometers ).
History
The nickname Voltaire was the place in 1878 in honor of the great French philosopher Voltaire, who from 1759 until his death in 1778, lived here (for a stay in Paris) and the place had a lasting influence. 1890 was erected a statue of him in the town.
Population
With 8452 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Ferney- Voltaire is the ninth largest municipality in the department of Ain. The population increased by 13.3 % between 1999 and 2010.
Economy and infrastructure
Ferney -Voltaire is the seat of the FDI World Dental Federation, the International Association of Dentists and the Public Services International (PSI, Eng. Public Services International, PSI), the global association of public sector unions. Further, the Centre international d' étude du siècle XVIIIè, ( CIEDS ) There is established, it pursues research projects and their publication on all aspects of the 18th century.
Ferney -Voltaire is served by a bus line of the SNCF, Versoix connects with the station Bellegarde- sur -Valserine, where connection is made to the TGV to Paris. Ferney -Voltaire is served by three bus lines of the Transports Publics Genevois. The F-line bus connects Gex with the Genève- Cornavin Railway Station, the bus line Y connects Ferney- Voltaire Thoiry via Geneva airport and the bus line O, which has been operating since the end of February 2011 connects Meyrin Gravière, where connection is made to the tram Geneva, with the Lycée international de Ferney- Voltaire.
