Ferrari 250 TR 61 Spyder Fantuzzi

The Ferrari 250TRI, also known as Ferrari 250TRI Fantuzzi Spider, was used in versions TRI'60 and TRI'61 of the Scuderia Ferrari from 1960 to 1963 in sports car racing.

Technology

When test day before the 24 - hour race at Le Mans in 1960 Ferrari introduced a new sports car in front based on the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. The 250TRI should complement the sports car prototype this year. The type designation TRI received the Ferrari from the red cylinder head - for TR " Testa Rossa " - and from the independent suspension now used - I for "Independent Suspension". The chassis has been redesigned and shortened the wheelbase at 2,350 mm. The body turned Fantuzzi ago. The total weight, without fuel and fluids, was 685 kg with very low for a racing sports car of the early 1960s. 1960 built Fantuzzi two copies, which began the Scuderia in different races.

1961 learned of the 250 TRI a major overhaul. The V12 engine now made 315 hp and therefore 15 bhp more than the previous year's model. In the wind tunnel, the new body that was built back in Fantuzzi (2 copies) was born. The windshield was pulled along the doors back. The car got a striking spoiler as an extension of the hood. The 250 TRI'61 received corresponding to the Formula 1 racing car of 1961, the Ferrari 156, a front end with two oval, terminating in a flat tip cooling openings - the shark's mouth.

Racing applications

Was realized quite quickly that, the concept of the TRI was successful. Were the 1960 stakes sparse and therefore great success not possible, put the Scuderia racing car from 1961 regularly. The first overall victory there was in March 1961 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where the works team celebrated a double victory. Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien won before the TRI with the number 15, where four pilots - Giancarlo Baghetti, Willy Mairesse, Richie Ginther and Wolfgang von Trips - shared the cockpit. After the second course of Mexican brothers Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, the 1000- km race at the Nürburgring followed by another double victory, this time driven out at the 24 - hour race at Le Mans. Hill and Gendebien won before Mairesse and his teammate Mike Parkes. At the 4- hour race at Pescara there was another success in September 1961. Lorenzo Bandini and Ludovico Scarfiotti won on a TRI, the Scuderia Centro Sud had reported.

1962 repeated the Scuderia success in Sebring. The TRI'61 piloted Joakim Bonnier and Lucien Bianchi to victory. This year there were successes by Carlo Maria Abate during a national sports car race in Reims and Lorenzo Bandini at the Trophée d' Auvergne.

The last race for a TRI there were at a SCCA race at Laguna Seca with the American Frank Crane at the helm, the Eleventh was in the race.
