Findings and excavations prove the occupation of the site for over 4000 years. Later, the Romans left many traces, including bridges (as in Alfundão ), religious places of worship, and residential buildings, especially the villa rustica of Monte da Chaminé. After the fall of the Roman province of Lusitania, the place was part of the Western Goth to be part of the Arabic al -Andalus after the invasion of the Moors beginning of the 8th century. However, further documents with more accurate data are non-existent.

In the meantime decaying ruins of the castle, the local government established in 1834 the church cemetery, so that today no remains of this castle more can be seen.

In 1516, Ferreira received city rights ( Foral ) by King Manuel I, and the place took some recovery. In this context, some noble families settled ( Lacerdas, Sousa, Vilhenas and Passanhas ) here. 1627 Ferreira was the seat of a former county ( comarca, comparable to a present-day administrative region ). Later it was placed under the forerunners of today's district of Beja, but Ferreira do Alentejo remained through all the administrative reforms through to the present day, an independent circuit.
