Ferry Tales

Ferry Tales is an American documentary originating from Hamburg director Katja Esson from the year 2003.

Action

The film portrays five women aboard the Staten Iceland Ferry on its half-hour ride to Manhattan. These Esson accompanied these women three months during the morning rush hour on the ride at 08:15 clock. Applying makeup and styling they exchange about racism in the world of work, husbands, boyfriends, bosses and concerns with the children, but also about the latest " gossip ferry ".

Producer Corinna Sager describes the film as " an homage to New York, and especially to the ordinary women who live here ."

Background

The idea for the film came from Birgit Staudt, the composer of the soundtrack to a music video on the ferry the women noticed during filming. After filming had been completed, the filmmakers, the women decided on the basis of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 after her experiences on that day to interview and to document this in the movie.

After the Oscar nomination, the New York Times discussed on 21 February 2004 in her New York edition of the film on the cover of the culture section. Shortly thereafter, the American television channel HBO bought the rights to the film for $ 50,000 and thought of the idea to make a series. With some delay, the film also on the topic in the feature pages of national newspapers and magazines in Germany was.
