Fessenheim

Fessenheim (Alsatian Fàssene ) is a commune with 2253 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Guebwiller, for Canton Ensisheim and is the seat of the municipal association Essor du Rhin.

Geography

The community Fessenheim is about 25 kilometers northeast of Mulhouse on the Rhine side channel or on the Rhine, and thus on the border with Germany.

  • The Baroque church of Sainte -Colombe comes from the 1774.
  • A barrage of about twelve meters on the side of the river channel ( Grand Canal d'Alsace ) provides the necessary height for the hydroelectric plant Fessenheim.
  • Above the hydroelectric power plant is located about a mile south-east of the location of the village center Fessenheim Nuclear Power Plant with two pressurized water reactors with a net output of 880 MW each; it was put into operation in 1978. It performs particularly well on the German side in the ruling here the main wind direction ( from southwest ( Burgundian gate), to northeast ) area, due to frequent breakdowns and its location in an earthquake zone to major concerns and the demand for the fastest possible shutdown.
  • A lock for inland navigation on the Rhine side channel
  • Opened on 20 May 2006 Alain- Foechterle Erich Dilger Bridge, a single-lane bridge across the Rhine into Germany to the motorway terminal 64b of the Federal Highway 5, the German twin town Hart House and the places Grißheim and Heiterheim

Community partnerships

Fessenheim has partnerships with the communities Schœlcher in Martinique and hard home (since 1993) on the opposite bank of the Rhine in the Breisgau.

Personalities

Victor Schœlcher continued the liberation of slaves in the French colonies by ( anniversary April 27, 1848 ). There is accordingly a Schœlcher Museum ( Maison Schoelcher ) in place; also in the Musée de la Hardt Schœlcher is appreciated help of exhibits, which have to do with his life's work.
