Festive Cantata (Bruckner)

The festive cantata WAB 16 ( full title: hard - Cantate the occasion of the foundation stone for the cathedral building ) is a sacred choral works by Anton Bruckner for four -part male choir, male solo quartet, bass solo and wind band.

The composition was commissioned by the Bishop of Linz Franz Joseph Rudigier the foundation stone laying ceremony of Mary Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Linz. The original text was provided by the theology professor Maximilian Prammesberger. For the instrumental ensemble Bruckner chose a big band (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass tuba) and timpani and an alternative set of organ ad libitum. Bruckner presented on 25 April 1862, work completed and on May 1, the cantata was first performed at the construction site led by Engelbert Lanz.

The work is divided into eight short parts:

  • I. Choir "Praise to the Lord" ( male chorus, orchestra)
  • II solo quartet and chorus " ropes your power and strength " ( soloists, men's chorus, flute, clarinet, bassoon)
  • III. Choir "Praise to the Lord" ( male chorus, orchestra)
  • IV Bass Solo "From the womb of earth " ( bass soloist, orchestra)
  • V. solo quartet "This is the Immaculate house" ( solo a cappella )
  • VII choir a cappella " The country's tribes surge pious" ( Men's Choir a cappella )
  • VIII Choir "Praise to the Lord" ( male chorus, orchestra)

The numbers 3 and 8 are respectively engaged at the beginning of the main theme from number 1. At number one is also on the main theme of the Fugue " basis and cornerstone" connected.

On a re- staging of the work in 1955 by the Vienna Men's Choral Association under Karl Etti the pressure of a piano score and the orchestral parts by Musikverlag Doblinger followed. The study score has been published as part of the Critical Edition, 1987 ( 2nd edition 1998).
