Festus is a city of 9,660 inhabitants ( 2000) in Missouri. It is located 48 km south of St. Louis in the metropolitan area and is part of Jefferson County.

History

Originally, the city Festus about 1878 by a WJ was Adams founded under the name limit Ville, which soon received the nickname " Tanglefoot " ( loosely translated " drunkard " ), because the first shops of the village consisted mainly of saloons. It has been thought about a amalgamation with the neighboring, but then a decision was made to give the city a more venerable name.

Legend has it that the name had been found during a service, when the Bible was pitched at a random location and the name of Porcius Festus, governor of Judea in AD 60 caught my eye.
