FIBA Africa Championship 2005

The basketball Africa Championship 2005 (in short: Afrobasket 2005) is the 23rd edition of this tournament and was held from August 15 to 25, 2005 in the Algerian capital, Algiers and held in Staoueli in the province of Algiers on the outskirts of the capital. In Staoueli the games of the preliminary round group B and the placement round for places 9 to 12 place while in the capital of the preliminary round group A and the final round was held. The medal winner of the tournament qualified for the finals of the 2006 World Cup.

Defending champions Angola won without defeat superior to his fourth consecutive title and eighth overall in the last nine sweeps; the slightest difference in points one had five points in the semi-final victory over the later bronze medalist Nigeria. Algeria hosts faltered at the end, after losing in the first round only the meaningless for the host last group match against Mali. Mode

At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of six teams as a round-robin tournament. While the two worst teams in each group then places nine to twelve playing off in a placement round, reached the other eight teams reach the finals, each of which was held in the knockout system. The losers of the games of the quarterfinals played in a Placement Round positions five to eight, while the losers of the games of the semifinal in the " small final " not only for the bronze medal in this tournament, but also to the remaining starting place for the World Cup finals in 2006 played.
