FIBA EuroBasket 2011

The European Basketball Championship of 2011 ( officially: Euro Basket 2011) was the 37th edition of this tournament and was held from 31 August to 18 September 2011 in Lithuania instead. It was organized by FIBA ​​Europe, the European Basketball Federation. The two finalists were given a place at the Olympic Games in 2012.

Participant

A total of 24 teams took part in the Euro Basket 2011 who qualified in different ways for the tournament. Originally 16 participants were planned, but a request from the host Lithuanian Basketball Federation towards the grounds of the strong European power density, the European Basketball Federation the number of participants increased two years earlier than planned on 24 participants. Venues

The group games were played in Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus and Klaipeda. All other games were held in Vilnius and Kaunas.

Qualifying for Eurobasket 2011

First qualifying round (Qualifying Round)

The First qualifying round (Qualifying Round) was held from 2 to 29 August 2010. 15 teams played in three groups of five each, in home and away matches against each other. The four best teams from each group qualify for the Euro Basket 2011.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, six teams played in four groups against each other. The winner of the match was awarded two points, the loser one point. Second round

After the preliminary competition, the first three teams qualified in each group for the second round. The three teams of groups A and B formed the group E ( Vilnius), the Qualified Groups C and D formed the new group F ( Vilnius). Each team met once against each of the three teams from the other Preliminary Round group. From the preliminaries, the points were continued that were achieved against skilled teams.

Final round

Mode

After the second round to the first four teams qualified in each of the two groups E and F for the final round. It was played in the quarter final cross against an opponent from the other sub-lap group. Subsequently, both the winners of the quarter finals met in the semi-finals, and the losers in the placement round for positions five to eight. The winners of the semi-finals contested the final, the losers play for third place. The winners of the placement games played for fifth place, the losers for seventh place.

The two finalists were given a starting place for the Olympic Games 2012 in London and the teams from the third to the sixth place qualified for the Olympic qualifying tournament. Britain was qualified for the Olympic Games as host.

Honors

To the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, the Spaniard Juan Carlos Navarro was elected. The All -Tournament team were besides him his countryman Pau Gasol, the Frenchman Tony Parker who plays for Macedonia Bo McCalebb and the Russian Andrei Kirilenko.
