FIBA Oceania Championship

The basketball Ozeanienmeisterschaft of Men ( officially: FIBA Oceania Championship ) is discharged by the World Federation FIBA Oceania Continental Championship in basketball. Mostly it consists solely of a final round of three games between Australia and New Zealand from 1993 to 1999, there was only one final game. First time in 2009 an outward and a return match was played. If there are more than two participants, a group stage previously held, in which the teams once each against each other. Record title holder is Australia, which won 18 of the previous 21 sweeps and 1979-2001 over 28 games unbeaten away, and it 1999, when host already qualified for the Olympics, did not compete. In 2001, New Zealand was the first time prevail twice against Australia and so win the title.

The championship takes place since 1971 in most every two years and is also the oceanic qualifying tournament for the FIBA World Championships or the Olympic Games. Until 2003 it qualified only the winner for the next tournament. Due to the successful cutting of New Zealand at the 2002 World Cup, which had reached the semi-finals, and the simultaneous absence of the Australian team Oceania was awarded a second World Cup starting place. Also for the 2004 Olympic Games qualified for the first time two teams from Oceania, this second launch site was replaced for the 2008 Games by a starting place at the inaugural pre-Olympic tournament since 1976.
