Fiber media converter

Media converters are devices used in networking, network segments of different transmission media such as twisted pair cable, coaxial cable (copper) or fiber optic interconnect and thus implement the transmitted data physically from one medium to the other. Through fiber optic media converter enormous enlargement of the range of a network can be achieved by, for example, a TP cable of max. 100 m reach on a transmission via optical fibers ( fiber optic cables ) is reacted with up to 100 km range.

Media converters operate either on the first or second layer of the OSI model:

  • Standard Media Converter acts like a repeater and therefore work on layer 1 Normally each direction is a repeater used so that a full-duplex operation is possible.
  • Switched Media Converters, however, function as a bridge and therefore operate at layer 2

Examples

Continuous transmission media of specific network technologies can be implemented between which (without switch function only within the same speed):

Fiber optic media converter

Fiber optic media converter (fiber optic media converter ) to convert internal electrical to optical signals (eg fieldbus signals and Ethernet signals ) and provide the direct link between various copper cable or fiber optic cable types here. Other network components such as routers, Industrial Ethernet, switches or servers are connected via fiber optic media converter. In this way, the range of an existing network can be increased because ranges of up to 100 kilometers without additional reinforcement can be bridged with optical waveguides. In addition, can be so old network installations together with a new wiring or overcome length restrictions.

Built-in redundancy mechanisms to ensure high availability of networks, as well as the flexible configuration of linear, star, tree and ring structures. For the connection and bridging of large distances, the fiber optic media converters are able to use various technologies such as fiber POF, PCS fibers and multimode and singlemode fiber with various fiber optic connector types. Depending on the application and the required range of distances can thus be realized of several meters to several tens of kilometers.
