Fibrous root system

Shallow roots are plants with roots, the plate-shaped propagating in the upper soil layers.

Among them are many pine species, jack pine, often the Douglas fir, hornbeam and willow. In poor soil conditions, shallow roots can not find a comfortable grip and are windthrow at risk during a storm. In good soil conditions and on suitable rocks shallow roots can often develop a good root system and grow in all rocks. They are then stable in general.

The opposite of the shallow roots are the taprooted. They are planted for the purpose of organic farming in so-called mixed cultures.
