Fides et Ratio

Fides et Ratio ( Faith and Reason ) of 14 September 1998 is the thirteenth and penultimate encyclical of Pope John Paul II You is subtitled: To the Bishops of the Catholic Church - about the relationship between faith and reason. In eight steps, the text goes from the initial invitation to self-knowledge, and describing current demands and tasks.

The right understanding of the revelation of God's wisdom and the axioms Credo ut intellegam ( I believe in order to understand ) and Intel Lego ut credam ( I understand in order to believe ) be explained, was used to frame the right relationship between faith and reason to formulate to justify the interventions of the Magisterium in the philosophical area and to emphasize the interaction between theology and philosophy. It begins with the opening words, that faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.

The encyclical insists that a ratio recta is necessary from the perspective of faith, to penetrate the revelation intellectually. Consequently, not every philosophy compatible with Christianity, nor is it possible to get from any modern conception of the full knowledge of Catholic doctrine. However, the Pope has explicitly recognized that faith is a variety of philosophical concepts approves, as long as none is against the dogma of normatively considered.
