Field Replaceable Unit

The Field Replaceable Unit (FRU ) is a module that spend on site " in the field", ie without the unit to a repair shop or the manufacturer, can be replaced. An example are the components from which a computer is constructed (graphics card, hard drive, etc. ). If the module is hot- swappable, the exchange can happen even during operation.

As a FRU, the part number of replaceable components is known (eg from a notebook ) as well as older hard drives and Others at IBM. With the newer hard drives is the name Part Number (P / N).

For modules with IPMI support a standardized data set is stored, containing information about the module and can be read by the Baseboard Management Controller. In this record, general information such as the manufacturer and type designation are stored, plus more specific information, such as sensors or the included power requirements. In ATCA-/MicroTCA-Systemen MCH, AMCs, Cooling Unit and Power Modules are grouped under the name FRU.
