Field Station La Gamba

The Station La Gamba in the Rainforest of the Austrians in Costa Rica is an Austrian research, teaching and training institution that has set itself the goal of making a contribution to the study of tropical rain forests, to build interest in the conservation and study of the rain forest and lay and to give nature interested parties the opportunity to deepen their understanding of nature in the rainforest.

Tropical station

The station is located in the south of Costa Rica on the edge of the National Park Piedras Blancas in the Rainforest of the Austrians. This species-rich tropical forest covers 142 km ² and could be saved from deforestation by the initiative of the Rainforest of the Austrians. From bought in 1993 Quonset have two Austrian biologists, Werner Huber and Hofer Anton Weiss, the Station La Gamba created with the support of the "Association Rainforest of the Austrians " and the University of Vienna. The station comprises several buildings, scientific equipment and a botanical garden.

The Field Station is an important tool for the conservation of the Esquinas forest, one of the last remaining lowland rain forests on the Pacific coast of Central America. It provides an ideal base for students, scholars and other interested parties is to go about their issues and provides an opportunity to deepen the understanding of nature. As an integral part of the municipality of La Gamba is also an important focal point for the local population and attempts, among others to spread the conservation thoughts.

For many years, the staff of the Field Station also committed to development projects in the region. For example, the former loggers were designed as National Park Rangers and landscapers.

Since 2007, an Austrian foreign service can be completed.
