Fier ( Albanian: Fieri ) is a city in central Albania. It has 55 845 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is the capital of the eponymous district and Qark.

The only about 200 years old city is an important center of the Albanian industry and transport links plays an important role: Here national roads intersect in the form of railway lines and roads or highways. Geography

Fier is the Myzeqe level, the most important agricultural production area of the country, about 16 km from the Adriatic Sea and about 100 km south of Tirana. History

The city was founded in the 18th century as a market of Aromanian nomadic shepherds. So it was in 1769 still a village with 24 houses of clay.

1864, the modern city of Kahramanmaras Vrioni Pasha and his son Omer Pasha Vrioni was founded. They brought this French city planners and architects for Fier. The square and round main features of this plan can be seen today. Twelve kilometers west of Fier are the ruins of the ancient city of Apollonia. The Museum of Apollonia displays finds from the excavation. About 15 kilometers north is on a hill near the village Kolonja the important Orthodox monastery Ardenica. 20 km northwest lies 45 km ² lagoon Karavasta.

Economy

2007, a new shopping center in the Qendra Tregtare Univers was built in the city, the largest in southern Albania.

Fier is located in the main producing area of Albania. The products include olive oil, milk and meat products, vegetables, bread, flour and various drinks.

Traffic

Fier is located on a nationally important transport route to Greece. In the last few years is the distance from the capital Tirana Durres on until after Fier and Vlora on to completely passable as a motorway ( National Highway and Motorway A2 SH4 ).
