Fiesch

Village center

Fiesch is a municipality at the foot of the Eggishorn ( 2934 m above sea level. NN ) in the upper Rotten (or Rhone- ) valley in the district of Goms in the canton of Valais.

History

Fiesch was first mentioned in 1203 in a charter of the abbot of Disentis. In this case, a witness is called by the name, Rudolf de Vios '. From 1438 to the mid-19th century, the town was mostly written as Viesch. On August 15, 1905, the name was established by a federal decree to today's spelling Fiesch.

The construction of the Furka road ( 1836) by the Rhone valley and the connection to the Matterhorn -Gotthard -Bahn (1915 ) Fiesch was developed for tourism. With the establishment of Fiesch -Eggishorn ( 1964-1966 ) and the construction of the village Fiesch won the tourism had its importance as the most important economic factor of the community.

For over 400 years the Fiescher prayed for the melting of the earlier threatening the valley glacier. In 2010, the Pope allowed the change of the vow, since Fiescher may pray against the disappearance of the glaciers.

Economy

Main source of income of the village is tourism, especially hiking, biking, paragliding, snowboarding, climbing and skiing and other sports for which Fiesch is an ideal starting point.

On the previously mentioned Kühboden Fiesheralp middle station of the cable car Fiesch - Eggishorn, is a ski resort and the starting area for paragliders and hang glider pilots. In town there are 14 hotels with a total of over 600 beds. Together with the apartments and chalets, there are over 4000 beds.

Attractions

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Jungfrau -Aletsch- Bietschhorn is accessible from Fiesch a cable car to Eggishorn.

Train Crash

Derailed At noon on July 23, 2010 at the train wreck of Fiesch the three rearmost carriage of a Glacier Express as the train driver had accelerated the train in a curve too early. The accident caused a human life, 42 people were injured.
