Fifth government of Israel

The Cabinet Moshe Scharet I ( Hebrew ממשלת ישראל החמישית ) is the third coalition government during the Second legislature of the Knesset, which was formed by Moshe Scharet on 26 January 1954. It is the first government since the Israeli Declaration of Independence without David Ben-Gurion as prime minister. The new government formation was necessary because David Ben- Gurion resigned from his position as Prime Minister of the Fourth Cabinet.

The coalition government was like the last government of members of parties: Mifleget Poale Eretz Israel, HaPo'el haMisrachi, Intellectual Center, General Zionists, Progressive Party and the three Arab parties represented Israelis: Reshima Demokratit LeAravei Yisrael, Kidma VeAvoda and Hakla'ut VePituah.

Following the resignation of Pinhas Lawon during the Lavon Affair on February 21, 1955 David Ben-Gurion took office as Secretary of Defense.
