Figueres

Figueres [ fiɣeɾəs ] (not officially spanish Figueras ) is a city in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the tourist area of ​​Costa Brava, has 45 123 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is the capital of the Alt Empordà. The city is located 28 m above sea level.

History

The city is dominated by the octagonal fortress Castell de Sant Ferran 18th century. With an area of ​​32 hectares, this military fort was built for 6,000 people and 500 horses and is now considered the largest bastion fortress, which was built in the 18th century in Europe.
