Fiji Times

The Fiji Times is a daily English-language newspaper, with a part in the Fijian language, published in the capital, Suva, Fiji.

History

The Fiji Times was founded on September 4, 1869 by George Littleton Griffiths ( * 1844 Woolwich, England - 1908 Suva, Fiji ) founded in Levuka and is the oldest newspaper in Fiji, which still appears. It claims for itself to be the first newspaper in the world, with a daily output.

The newspaper belongs Motibhai Mahendra Patel, who bought them from Rupert Murdoch 's News Corp. in 2010. The former editor Evan Hannah was expelled in 2008 from Fiji because it was accused by the transitional government for meddling in politics.

Military coups and censorship

The newspaper was censored by the military coup of 1987 by the Sitiveni Rabuka administration temporarily. In protest, an issue was published, which showed instead of the censored article white areas. After the coup against the civilian government in December 2006, the newspaper announced that she would rather not give out newspaper, but to submit to state censorship.
